Another case of bird flu has been identified in Norfolk, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the current outbreak across the east to 13.
The highly pathogenic strain was detected in commercial poultry at a facility near Wymondham, Diss, on Friday. In a statement published on its website, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced that a 3km (1.8-mile) protection zone and a 10km (6.2-mile) surveillance zone have been established around the affected premises. These measures took effect at 20:30 GMT on 28 March, and the authorities have confirmed that the birds on the site will now be culled.
Defra emphasized that the risk to human health remains low, adding that chicken and eggs are safe to consume as long as they are properly cooked.
