Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD has unveiled groundbreaking fast-charging technology capable of adding 400 kilometers (approximately 249 miles) of range in just a five-minute charge. This innovation positions BYD at the forefront of EV charging capabilities, surpassing current industry standards.
BYD's new "Super e-Platform" operates at peak charging speeds of 1,000 kilowatts (kW), effectively doubling the capacity of Tesla's forthcoming V4 superchargers, which are expected to peak at 500 kW. This advancement significantly reduces charging times, making them comparable to traditional gasoline refueling durations. BYD founder Wang Chuanfu emphasized the company's commitment to alleviating charging concerns, stating that this marks the first instance in the industry where megawatt-level charging power has been achieved.
The enhanced charging technology will debut in two of BYD's latest models: the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV. Both vehicles are competitively priced starting at 270,000 yuan (approximately $37,330). These models are designed to utilize the full potential of the Super e-Platform, offering consumers rapid charging solutions that enhance the practicality of EV ownership.
To support this technological advancement, BYD has committed to constructing over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China. While a specific timeline for this rollout has not been disclosed, this initiative aims to address the current reliance of BYD owners on third-party charging facilities, thereby enhancing the convenience and accessibility of charging options for its customers.
In addition to charging advancements, BYD has partnered with drone manufacturer DJI to introduce the "Lingyuan" system—a vehicle-integrated drone launch platform. This feature allows drones to take off and land from a moving vehicle, enabling drivers to capture aerial footage during their journeys. The system is available as a 16,000 yuan (approximately $2,200) option and is compatible with various BYD models.
BYD's recent innovations underscore its competitive stance in the EV market. The company reported sales of 1.76 million vehicles in 2024, closely trailing Tesla's 1.79 million units. Notably, 90% of BYD's sales occurred within China, with a significant portion attributed to its hybrid vehicles. These developments reflect BYD's strategic efforts to enhance its technological offerings and expand its market presence both domestically and internationally.
