On April 14, 2025, pop icon Katy Perry embarked on a historic journey into space aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard NS-31 rocket. The mission marked the first all-female spaceflight since 1963, featuring a crew of six accomplished women: Perry, journalist Gayle King, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights advocate Amanda Nguyen, film producer Kerianne Flynn, and pilot and journalist Lauren Sánchez.
The suborbital flight launched from Blue Origin's facility in West Texas, reaching an altitude of approximately 62 miles above Earth. During the 11-minute journey, the crew experienced several minutes of weightlessness before safely returning to the Texas desert.
Perry carried a daisy flower into space as a tribute to her daughter, Daisy. Upon landing, she held the flower aloft and sang "What a Wonderful World," expressing the emotional significance of the experience.
The mission was attended by notable figures, including Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom, and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos. The crew's stylish spacesuits were designed by Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim of Oscar de la Renta and Monse, adding a touch of glamour to the historic flight.
This landmark mission not only showcased the capabilities of commercial spaceflight but also served as an inspiration for future generations, highlighting the expanding role of women in space exploration.
