Ryan Coogler's latest film, Sinners, has made a significant impact at the box office, earning $45.6 million domestically and an additional $15.4 million internationally during its opening weekend. This performance places it ahead of A Minecraft Movie, which garnered $41.3 million in its third weekend.
Set in 1932 Mississippi, Sinners follows twin brothers Elijah "Smoke" and Elias "Stack" (both portrayed by Michael B. Jordan) as they return home to open a juke joint, only to confront a supernatural vampire threat. The film's narrative intertwines themes of racial tension, family loyalty, and the supernatural.
The ensemble cast includes Hailee Steinfeld as Mary, Jack O'Connell as the antagonist Remmick, Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim, Wunmi Mosaku as Annie, and Li Jun Li as Grace. The film also features Miles Caton as Sammie Moore, a young blues prodigy whose music becomes central to the unfolding events.
Critically, Sinners has been well-received, holding a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and earning an "A" CinemaScore from audiences. The film's success is also attributed to Coogler's unique agreement with Warner Bros., which granted him creative control and future ownership rights after 25 years.
As Sinners continues its theatrical run, its strong debut suggests a promising trajectory, potentially establishing it as a standout original film in a market dominated by franchise titles.
