Six Years Later, De Tomaso P72 is Real and It's Spectacular

Italian supercar maker De Tomaso unveiled the production version of its P72 earlier this month, six years after the original concept made its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K.
It looks absolutely stunning, like a jewel on four wheels. An ultra-exclusive one, too, as production will be limited to just 72 units globally.

A tribute to the P70 prototype (also known as the Sport 5000) that company founder Alejandro de Tomaso developed in the early 1960s with Caroll Shelby before the latter focused on the Ford GT40, the curvaceous and copper-accented P72 is the work of designer Jowyn Wong, rivalling cars like the Pagani Huayra in elegance.

Of course, the carbon-fibre body is just a blank canvas for the lucky few customers who will be able to choose from a large selection of colours, finishes, trims and options.
The interior is just as spectacular, with a plethora of copper-style elements including the gauges, steering wheel hub, main controls and the glorious shifter with exposed internals. Inspiration comes from the 1960s and 1970s.

As you can see, there is no digital display—everything is analog. De Tomaso has, however, included a discreet phone holder on the console. Forget about a drive mode selector, as well: the P72 is always set to deliver maximum performance.
Speaking of which, the carbon fibre unibody structure houses a pushrod suspension and a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine derived from Ford but tuned by Roush. The P72 cranks out 700 horsepower and 605 lb-ft pf torque, which doesn’t seem like much for a modern supercar and is actually less than the late Mustang Shelby GT500. Acceleration times are not specified.

De Tomaso will sell the P72 starting at around 1.6 million euros ($2.5 million CAD), with the first units rolling off the line at partner company HWA’s plant in Affalterbach, Germany in late 2025. Since you can’t have one, take a look at the gallery up top for more pictures
